RUINS OF THE HERMITAGE OF SAN XOÁN DA MISARELA

At the confluence of the San Xoán and Barbanza rivers, the San Xoán da Misarela cement plant can be found. It is the ruins of a Franciscan convent that is still inhabited in the Late Middle Ages. The oral tradition has it that the hermitage was founded by St. Mauro, who arrived there in a stone boat. The ” Moors ” pursued him, but by providence, as the saint was going up the river, he was filling it with stones to prevent his persecutors from passing through, hence the name of the river Stones. In its vicinity, a medieval bridge was also built, a cruciform petroglyph and the so-called “stone boat”, which is an archaeological site that is worth visiting.
